Helping People Make Better Lives
BI Cares Foundation supports the following nonprofit and the valuable work it does through our employee skills-based volunteer program. Last year, BI Human Resources employees conducted a job-seeking skills workshop for TBICO students and are planning another workshop for this fall.
Founded in 1993 and based in Danbury, Connecticut, The Bridge to Independence and Career Opportunities (TBICO) is an organization founded on the principle that employment and financial capability are keys to moving an individual or a family forward to self-sufficiency. Simply put… Better Skills. Better Jobs. Better Lives.
The beneficiaries of TBICO services are people, generally women, who lack adequate skills, tools and support systems to find meaningful and gainful employment. Some live at or below the poverty level. Few receive any public assistance. And a growing number are women who, as a result of the recession, have lost their economic security and now struggle to keep their home, pay their bills, and put food on the table. Oftentimes these are women who despite having good educations must now deal with some of the same obstacles chronically poor women have always encountered--a lack of recent work experience, outdated skills, limited or obsolete work histories and access to affordable childcare.
While TBICO participants come from very diverse backgrounds, they all come for the same reason -- to gain contemporary skills and the confidence to secure and sustain employment so that they can support their family and contribute positively to their community.
TBICO’s objective is to create solutions; the goal, to be a catalyst for change—change that is sustainable and long-lasting. Our programs and services are cost-free and available for a lifetime to women motivated to build new or stronger employment skills and committed to being self-sufficient. In the last twenty years, TBICO has helped over three thousand individuals and families find better jobs and build more stable futures.
The words of a former student probably explain TBICO the best. “At the end of my program I was feeling good about myself for the first time in a very long time, and the people here at TBICO have given me the skills, confidence, hope, and inspiration that I needed to give myself a new start with a better career.”
